Drop General Foreman

 

Position Summary:

The Drop General Foreman oversees all aspects of aerial and underground fiber drop installation projects. This position leads field crews, coordinates with project managers, ensures compliance with safety standards, manages materials and equipment, and ensures timely and high-quality completion of fiber drop installations from network distribution points to customer premises.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing multiple drop crews.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Supervision

    • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of multiple fiber drop crews (aerial, underground, and in-home installation).
    • Provide guidance and training to crew members to maintain high productivity and workmanship.
    • Conduct daily tailgate meetings and enforce safety protocols on all job sites.

 

Project Execution

    • Interpret construction plans, work orders, and schematics for accurate fiber drop installations.
    • Ensure fiber drops are installed to company specifications and meet or exceed industry standards (e.g., NEC, NESC).
    • Manage scheduling and job assignments to meet deadlines and minimize downtime.
    • Perform quality control inspections of completed work, identifying and correcting deficiencies.

 

Safety & Compliance

    • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture in accordance with OSHA, local, and company standards.
    • Conduct regular site safety inspections and document findings.
    • Ensure all permits, locates (811), and utility clearances are in place before commencing work.

 

Communication & Coordination

    • Act as the primary point of contact between field crews, project managers, utility companies, and clients.
    • Report on project status, crew performance, material usage, and any site issues to management.
    • Coordinate with traffic control teams and subcontractors as needed.

 

Logistics & Equipment

    • Manage inventory and requisition materials, tools, and equipment for job sites.
    • Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and accounted for.
    • Maintain accurate documentation, including as-builts, photos, daily logs, and timecards.

 

Required Qualifications:

Education & Certification:

    • Valid Class A Driver’s License with clean driving record.
    • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

    • Minimum 5 years of experience telecommunications construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
    • Experience with fiber drop installation (aerial and underground) using both manual and mechanical methods.

 

Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong understanding of fiber optic network layouts and drop installation procedures.
    • Proficient in reading blueprints, maps, and construction drawings.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to use construction-related software and mobile apps for reporting and documentation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vocational school training or apprenticeship

 

Work Environment:

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Exposure to dust, mud, insects, and loud equipment.
  • Regularly exposed to construction hazards such as open trenches, moving equipment, and vehicular traffic.
  • May require overtime or weekend work depending on project needs.

 

Physical Requirements:

Skills & Competencies:

    • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to endure the daily activity involved on the job site.
    • Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 80 pounds unassisted.
    • Occasionally lift items over 80 pounds with assistance.

Mobility and Flexibility

    • Stand, walk, and move over uneven terrain, construction sites, and confined areas for the majority of the workday.
    • Bend, squat, kneel, climb, reach, twist, and crawl into trenches, under structures, or within tight enclosures.
    • Climb ladders, steps, or equipment to access elevated or underground work zones.
    • Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for up to 11 hours to travel to and from job sites.

Manual Dexterity and Coordination

    • Use hand tools and power tools with precision and control.
    • Repetitive motion tasks such as digging, raking, or using wrenches and pliers.
    • Ability to work with small components such as fiber cable and splicing equipment.

Visual and Auditory Requirements

    • Visual acuity sufficient to read labels, identify cables, and operate tools and vehicles.
    • Color vision to distinguish wire or cable types.
    • Hearing sufficient to recognize warning signals, equipment alarms, or instructions.
