General Foreman

 

Job Summary:

 

The General Foreman will work closely with the Supervisor and the Project Manager in planning the project, tasking labor, estimating, assembling material lists. The General Foreman is responsible for developing and maintaining a good working relationship with employees and crews assigned to their scope of work.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversees multiple crews that may include Laborers, Operators, Splicers, Linemen and Groundsmen

 

Required Education / Experience & Qualifications:

 

  • Valid Class A CDL License with Tanker Certification
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current OSHA 10
  • First Aid and CPR Trained
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in construction trades as a Foreman
  • Must be in a current Foreman role or higher
  • Must be willing to travel when required
  • Must be comfortable working in a highly critical, fast paced environment with shifting priorities
  • Responsible to wear a cell phone and be available for problem escalation protocol for 24 X 7 support as may be needed
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and give directions so others will understand
  • Ability to work in a team environment and show exemplary leadership qualities
  • Is not overbearing with subordinates but able to gain respect by the way they treat people
  • Can take direction and criticism from superiors
  • Familiar with and willing to learn Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and MS Project scheduling software
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Manages stress and/or fast pace effectively
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Must have a working knowledge of the One Call System

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Sets the example for others to follow in all areas of the work including safety, company policies, attitude, conduct and dress
  • Has ability to perform all duties of a Foreman
  • Must wear appropriate PPE when performing tasks
  • Reports job progress and problems to management regularly, accurately, and objectively
  • Understands construction plans. Plans well in advance how to avoid scheduling conflicts with the other crews
  • Keeps plans and specifications up to date with revisions made on the job
  • Provides schedule input for planning and updates. When schedule dates slip or change, provides solutions for recovery to get the work back on schedule without causing project delays
  • Confers with Supervisor on questions regarding interpretation of plans, specifications and schedule
  • Know which crews have responsibility for various parts of the job
  • Completes a task analysis for the upcoming one to two weeks and determines the amount of manpower required to complete the tasks
  • Knows the approximate estimated time that was budgeted to do each task, and whether it can be done most efficiently with one worker, two, or a larger crew
  • Anticipates as far in advance as possible the need to increase or decrease the work force. Advises the Supervisor of tentative schedule of manpower needs and changes in the schedule as promptly as can be determined
  • Be sure that workers have all the materials and tools they need to work as productively as possible. Anticipate needs well in advance so there is no loss of productive time waiting for tools, materials, or instructions. Insist that employees report losses or shortages of tools or materials promptly so you can take the necessary corrective action
  • Ensures necessary material and equipment needed for the project are ordered timely and available in plenty of time to get delivery to the jobsite in full compliance with schedule requirements
  • Assigns each Foreman to available work which employee can do best work
  • Coaches any worker whose skills for doing an assigned task are deficient or rusty
  • Lays out jobs for Foreman and makes sure each knows his or her tasks and the most efficient methods for completing them
  • Determines and enforces a fair and adequate standard of workmanship and productivity for each crew
  • Supervises employees in performance of work, following safety rules, and adhering to company policies and procedures
  • Recommends disciplinary action when needed
  • Knows and strictly enforces all job and company safety rules, sets a good example of safe practices, promptly corrects any potential hazard that can be corrected by your crew, reports other hazards immediately to those responsible, and warns all Foreman of possible causes of accidents. Inattentive, careless or sloppy workers endanger themselves and others and must be warned and corrected
  • Understands company policies and carries them out consistently
  • Ensures the jobsite is kept clean and safe and enforces good housekeeping
  • Monitors Track VO daily and updates equipment location changes if needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers
  • Must be on call to address delays, emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite
  • Able to hear and speak on a telephone and 2-way radio
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any tool required to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments
  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending

 

Safety Expectations:

 

  • Know and enforce company safety rules and policies to include the company’s drug-free workplace policy, incident reporting policy, and fleet / safe driving policies
  • Verify safety rules are being followed by performing documented work safety assessments
  • Organize and deliver jobsite and shop safety meetings to employees
  • Perform documented corrective action with employees when safety rules are broken or when unsafe conditions are discovered
  • Recognize and reward employees when safety rules are followed, and unsafe conditions are controlled
  • Require, support, and promote pre-work job safety analysis / task safety analysis processes
  • Assess special projects and new jobs for safety concerns and prepare safety controls prior to beginning work
  • Manage safety equipment and personal protective equipment used by employees in your department and span of control
  • Verify and require that all vehicles, supplies, equipment, tools, and machines are used safely and maintained properly
  • Stop all unsafe acts by ANY employee and control hazardous conditions & risks that develop throughout the workday
  • Empower and authorize employees to work safely, utilize safety gear, and correct unsafe acts and hazardous conditions
  • Participate in management-level safety briefs and training
  • After an incident, participate in investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
